It’s All Greek to Me

Friday, February 12

Well, yesterday had me saying, “It’s all Greek to me.”

Because we went to Yanni’s Gyro for dinner.

I would think a lot of people would say – Go to a Mediterranean restaurant when there is snow on the ground?  Doesn’t seem right.

I have two things for you.  First, it snows in Greece.  Not often, but it does.  I was lucky enough to live in Greece for a few years when I was growing up.  While I loved it, I did miss some things.  Like snow.  But it sure was exciting the very few times I did see it.  The fuzzy guy by the door is me.

You didn't see this snow in Athens, but we lived outside, in a suburb that was up one of the mountains that ring the city.  Snow came infrequently, and melted quickly.  But was fun while it lasted.

Our dog (boy, was that one well-traveled dog!) absolutely loved it.

So I can say for a fact, Mediterranean cooking and snow can go together.

Second, the place was packed.  Every table full.  I have two theories about this:

#1 – People have discovered what a great restaurant this is.  Truly wonderful food and great service.  And prices that just can’t be beat!  Click Here to view the menu.

#2 – People are anti-Valentine’s Day like me.  I refuse to go to a restaurant on Valentine’s Day.  Crowds, waiting.  Smoochy-smoochy at the next table.  Ugh.  Is there a Scrooge for Valentine’s Day?  That would be me.  So I might have been joined by all of the other people going out on Friday night, and not on Valentine’s Day.  Just a thought.

The food here is good,  Really, really good.  We started with the Shrimp Saganaki.  Shrimp in a tomato and feta sauce.  A sauce that is so good, I am tempted to lick the place.  Well, I tried licking the plate, but Ken gave me the evil eye.  And Greeks are really good at the evil eye – it’s almost like he lived in Greece instead of me.  But it worked and I put the plate down.

I had the Lamb Souvlaki Platter as my main course.  So much food for $14.95.  So much good food.  And I became one of those people who had to take a picture.  So you could see how good it looks.

The lamb was perfectly cooked.  The Tzatziki Sauce was amazing (a sauce of yogurt, cucumber, lemon, olive oil, dill and garlic).  The pita, perfect.  Perfect pita!  You cannot have decent souvlaki without perfect pita.  The Greek fries both crisp and tender at the same time.  And a Greek Salad.  Or, as they call it in Greece, a salad.

Ken had Salmon topped with avocado tzatziki sauce.  I tried taking a picture, but he threatened me.  The man actually threatened me if I were to take a picture of his food.  Somebody in the family has to have a little decorum.  And it's Ken, not me.

And the salmon was great, too.  I am getting that second hand, as he did not offer me a taste.  But I take his word on it.

And we finished it off with some Baklava.  Phyllo pastry, nuts, butter, cinnamon and honey.  In perfect balance.  I know a lot of people say they don’t care for baklava because it’s too sweet.  Try it at Yanni’s.  not too sweet. You’ll love it.

Yanni’s is one of those places that make Lansdale great.  Because you’re not going to find a restaurant like this in a mall.  Or in a sea of chain restaurants.  You’re not going to get so much food for so little money.  You’re not going to get taken to the cleaners with expensive wine, because it’s a BYOB and you can bring your own.

Yanni’s Gyro.  A little piece of Mediterranean paradise on Main Street, Lansdale.

Lansdale Shopping Score:  1

We did need to buy a birthday card after that.  And at that hour at night there were not a whole lot of choices.  Walgreens.  We ended up at Walgreens.

I should have checked out how many cans of sardines were left!  But I forgot.

So, today’s score:
