The tale of the dishwasher, ceramic pots and Greek Food

Thursday, January 7

Ah, the tale of the dishwasher.  We love our appliances.  They make life so much easier.  Until they don’t.  Our dishwasher broke a few years ago.  I had it fixed – and the repair cost about half of what the dishwasher cost.  So when it broke this time, there was no way I was investing more money into it.  Time to get a new one.

Well – there is no appliance shop in Lansdale Borough I know of.  Should there be?  There’s so much competition from big box stores and established local retailers.  I ended up buying one from Home Depot because the sale prices were great. And I had a gift card.  And they had the model I wanted.  A perfect trifecta.

Until the dishwasher was delivered.  Damaged.  But damaged underneath, so I couldn’t see it.  It was uncovered by my plumber when he went to install it (more about the area’s best plumber in another post!).  So then I have to do the dance of the customer service call center.  Agent.  Transfer.  Agent. Hold. Bad news.  Hold. Frustration.  So – ten days later we get the replacement.  Now sitting in our sun porch waiting for the plumber.  Sigh – all I want is clean dishes.

Lansdale Shopping Score:  Zero (I would have if I could have, but it’s something not available in the borough)

Onto the ceramic pots!

I really like these things.  They’re huge, and very heavy.    I’m going to get round glass tops for them, and they will be side tables for our sun porch.  And such bargains!  I got them at an estate auction run by Sanford Alderfer Auctions.  Not in the borough.  But we don’t have an auction house in the borough!  And should we?  It’s a specialized field, and Sanford Alderfer has been doing it so long, and so well.  They need lots of warehouse space, outdoor storage space and parking.   They fit perfectly where they are.  You really should check them out.  But don’t bid against me.  No – that would be a bad thing.

So we will end the day with – you guessed it – dinner out (I think you’re beginning to see a pattern here).  This time, we grab a bottle of wine and go to a local Lansdale Borough BYOB – Yanni’s Gyro on Main Street.  I love this place.  Clean, welcoming, well designed.  Fantastic food.  And great service.  Amalia (she goes by Emily, as she feels too many Americans have problems with her Greek name) is wonderful.  Happy, smiling and welcoming.  And she remembers you – which, to me, is important when you go back to a restaurant more than once.  That was a pet peeve with Molly’s – no matter how many times we went there, no one recognized or remembered us.

Don’t think you like Greek food?  Try it.  Beef, pork, lamb, fish and chicken.  What’s not to like about those main ingredients?  And make sure you try the Shrimp Saganaki as an appetizer.  Amazing!

Yanni’s Gyro, under its original ownership, was a winner of Lansdale Borough’s Business of the Month Award.  Full disclosure – I’m on the Economic Development Committee, and Yannni’s was my choice to win the award.  And I’d award it again!  An outstanding addition to our business district.

Lansdale Shopping Score:  1

So the recap:

ONE opportunity to shop/eat in Lansdale met.

TWO needs not fulfilled by a Lansdale establishment.

Let’s see what today brings!
